Dr. Henry Cabrera’s Passion for Lavender Inspires a Thriving Business in South Kingston, Rhode Island

After a long day as a local anesthesiologist, Dr. Henry Cabrera trades in his white coat for the peaceful ambiance of Lavender Waves Farm. What began as a personal hobby has blossomed into both a successful business and a cherished home. The farm is a sanctuary where animals roam freely, drawing visitors from near and far who come to experience its outdoor paradise.
A dedicated and innovative agricultural entrepreneur, Dr. Henry Cabrera embarked on a transformative journey when he purchased Lavender Waves Farm in late 2016. His vision was to revitalize the farm while introducing sustainable farming practices that would ensure its success for years to come.
Located on 14 acres in South Kingstown, Rhode Island, Lavender Waves Farm is a haven for lavender enthusiasts. The farm is home to over 4,000 lavender plants, each a unique variety, all blooming in harmony around a central gazebo, creating a stunning and tranquil scene.
Why Lavender?
“I was drawn to lavender for its many health benefits, including its ability to support low blood pressure and ease stress and insomnia,” Dr. Cabrera shares.
The farm’s harvested lavender is used to create a range of products, such as essential oils, lotions, and candles, all of which are carefully packaged and sold.
But Lavender Waves Farm is more than just lavender – it also houses around 100 animals, including rare camels, chickens, guinea hens, ducks, geese, a white peacock, alpacas, and a vigilant llama.
“A lot of people ask me what I do with the animals,” says Dr. Cabrera. “And frankly, I just love them.”
The farm’s animal collection includes unique and friendly breeds, such as Gold-laced Brahma chickens and Pilgrim geese, which add to the charm and character of the farm.
Reviving a Piece of Rhode Island’s Agricultural Legacy
Lavender Waves Farm sits on land with a rich agricultural history, previously known as Gatewood Farm, which produced bacon and sausage. Over time, the land was subdivided, and the farm fell into disrepair.
“The property has deep agricultural roots,” Cabrera explains. “But farming is a tough business. Eventually, the land was subdivided and sold to support the farming operations.”
When Cabrera purchased the farm, he set about restoring and improving it. The once-dilapidated barn was renovated, new electricity and water systems were installed, and fresh stables were built. Rotational grazing pastures were created for livestock, and a garage was constructed for farm equipment and materials.
“When I was planning the layout,” Cabrera recalls, “it occurred to me to place a gazebo in the center and have all the lavender rows meet there. That’s exactly what we did.”
This unique layout has helped make Lavender Waves Farm a one-of-a-kind experience for visitors, centered not only around lavender but the entire experience of being on the farm.
Lavender Waves Farm Events
As the lavender fields bloom each June, Lavender Waves Farm invites visitors to enjoy its serene beauty and participate in special events like lavender yoga. Every Sunday during the summer, guests can attend yoga sessions amidst the fragrant lavender, finding relaxation in the heart of the farm.
The peak bloom season lasts from mid-June to early August, and during this time, the farm hosts the popular “Cut Your Own Lavender” event. Visitors can wander through the 4,000 lavender plants and cut their own bundles to take home. Cabrera also offers informative talks about the farm’s history, the various lavender varieties, and tips on cutting techniques.
Lavender Waves Farm’s Luxurious, Rustic Retreat
For those seeking a deeper connection to the lavender experience, the farm offers a luxurious one-bedroom farm suite. Perched above a converted garage, the suite offers guests an expansive view of the lavender fields.
The suite is adorned with rustic touches, such as amethyst geode sinks, a custom coffee table crafted from an 80-year-old slab of wood, and an antique wheelbarrow. These elements, combined with the lavender-inspired color scheme, create a cozy and inviting atmosphere for guests.
“I call the farm suite ‘luxuriously rustic,’” Cabrera explains. “I wanted it to be a luxury experience but still maintain a rural, rustic charm.”
Family Support in Building Lavender Waves Farm
Although Cabrera is the driving force behind Lavender Waves Farm, he credits his family’s unwavering support for its success. “I didn’t create this on my own,” he says. “From the start, I had to hire help, and my family has been here from the beginning. Teamwork has been key.”
Cabrera’s parents moved from Miami to assist in running the farm. The Cabrera family has deep roots in Cuba, where their ancestors also farmed before leaving due to the Fidel Castro regime.
“I’m sure [farming] is in my blood,” Dr. Cabrera shared on an episode of OnlyGood TV. “My grandfather would tell me stories about it. I often think about where I’d be if not for the Castro regime. I’d probably still be in Cuba, managing tobacco plantations.”
Thanks to the courage and resilience of his family, Dr. Cabrera was able to thrive in America, becoming both a doctor and a lavender business owner.
Lavender Waves Farm’s Growth and Success
The growth and success of Lavender Waves Farm have exceeded expectations. What began as a personal passion project has grown into a flourishing business with a loyal following and outstanding reviews. “The response to what I’ve built has gone beyond what I ever imagined,” Cabrera says.
Cabrera’s dedication to offering a unique and welcoming experience for every visitor has paid off. Lavender Waves Farm continues to receive praise from visitors, like Karen Maze, who exclaimed, “What a true joy to visit this gorgeous lavender farm on such a sunny summer day in RI!” With events like the “Cut Your Own Lavender” experience and a luxurious farm suite, Lavender Waves Farm has become a must-see destination for lavender lovers and those seeking a peaceful retreat.
“This is one of the most special places I’ve visited in a long time,” says Jodi Cummings, another visitor.
The farm’s combination of welcoming staff and stunning natural beauty has made a lasting impact on all who visit. Dr. Cabrera’s passion for lavender continues to thrive as he shares his farm’s charm with visitors and cultivates its growth.
